I start with rigilene boning and a piece of lycra. The rigilene should be about an inch longer than the final circumference you want the bangle to be, and I cut my lycra about an inch longer than that so I have excess at the ends. I cut mine to be about 10" long, if I am remembering correctly off the top of my head. I actually just take the piece of rigilene and make a loop and shove my hand through it, checking to make sure it can actually get over the widest part of my palm. If I'm making multiple I'll then use the first cut piece as my template for the others. I cut my piece of lycra about 3.5-4 times as wide as the piece of rigilene, so I've got wiggle room.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9K-LGhBpPRk/U0tSuCD6IWI/AAAAAAAAN_4/D_Z1tIt2Ogg/s1600/2013-01-28_16-17-20_42.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9K-LGhBpPRk/U0tSuCD6IWI/AAAAAAAAN_4/D_Z1tIt2Ogg/s1600/2013-01-28_16-17-20_42.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
Step one: stitch that sucker. I align the lycra edge with the rigilene edge (as best as I can) so that the lycra right side is down (if your lycra does in fact have a discernible right side) and so that the curve of the rigilene is also facing down (so you're stitching this to the inside first.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yukw7nuSL9I/U0tSuLOdWOI/AAAAAAAAN_4/U8rs58cm0go/s1600/2013-01-28_16-17-55_41.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yukw7nuSL9I/U0tSuLOdWOI/AAAAAAAAN_4/U8rs58cm0go/s1600/2013-01-28_16-17-55_41.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
I use a wide zig zag stitch on a long setting. The fewer times the needle must pierce the rigilene, the less chance of it bending and breaking! Use a heavy enough needle too as this stuff is THICK!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-e2pNgbDYRTU/U0tSuNbni8I/AAAAAAAAN_4/cKILRk-Ri-0/s1600/2013-01-28_16-19-01_962.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-e2pNgbDYRTU/U0tSuNbni8I/AAAAAAAAN_4/cKILRk-Ri-0/s1600/2013-01-28_16-19-01_962.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
This picture shows the top side and the one below shows the underside. As you can see in the above picture, there's some overlap and rough edges. It happens, trim it down until you've got a nice lycra edge that is either flush with the rigilene or the rigilene slightly extends over it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3oG7zzB5A6w/U0tSuNXasZI/AAAAAAAAN_4/Gr5FGiGyy4I/s1600/2013-01-28_16-19-46_51.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3oG7zzB5A6w/U0tSuNXasZI/AAAAAAAAN_4/Gr5FGiGyy4I/s1600/2013-01-28_16-19-46_51.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ouIgQwKiaBU/U0tSuCDueOI/AAAAAAAAN_4/C-5XAXkGBFs/s1600/2013-01-28_16-20-17_180.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ouIgQwKiaBU/U0tSuCDueOI/AAAAAAAAN_4/C-5XAXkGBFs/s1600/2013-01-28_16-20-17_180.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
Fold over not once...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-F6XZTSX4DsE/U0tSuMzTM0I/AAAAAAAAN_4/USUqz17cZpA/s1600/2013-01-28_16-20-41_429.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-F6XZTSX4DsE/U0tSuMzTM0I/AAAAAAAAN_4/USUqz17cZpA/s1600/2013-01-28_16-20-41_429.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
But twice until you've got two nice folded edges on both sides of the bracelet and you are again stitching with the inside of the bangle down.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uar2_4E2iqA/U0tSuFjL_wI/AAAAAAAAN_4/-2-Li265Qt0/s1600/2013-01-28_16-21-14_165.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uar2_4E2iqA/U0tSuFjL_wI/AAAAAAAAN_4/-2-Li265Qt0/s1600/2013-01-28_16-21-14_165.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
Repeat the same stitching process as above. Here you will find that if you have more excess fabric, it is easier to pull it nice and snug in any places you need to. If your lycra is cut properly on the grain you will have less issues with the fabric buckling and getting bunching. Manage your fabric as it goes through the machine to get a nice surface.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nTqs8n_3k1k/U0tSuHH6y7I/AAAAAAAAN_4/N_MilXjO_zY/s1600/2013-01-28_16-22-35_318.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nTqs8n_3k1k/U0tSuHH6y7I/AAAAAAAAN_4/N_MilXjO_zY/s1600/2013-01-28_16-22-35_318.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vTpmv-mCbtI/U0tSuBnfx5I/AAAAAAAAN_4/k_bwa5dF51E/s1600/2013-01-28_16-22-57_546.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vTpmv-mCbtI/U0tSuBnfx5I/AAAAAAAAN_4/k_bwa5dF51E/s1600/2013-01-28_16-22-57_546.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
Now that's a whole lotta excess fabric, so let's trim that down.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WpH_eagioUA/U0tSuAh-o7I/AAAAAAAAN_4/1CG0q2AX9jI/s1600/2013-01-28_16-23-46_636.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WpH_eagioUA/U0tSuAh-o7I/AAAAAAAAN_4/1CG0q2AX9jI/s1600/2013-01-28_16-23-46_636.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
I also trimmed any excess off of the ends. I like to leave 1/4" - 3/8" on the ends to give the loop a little bit of a nicer finish rather than one really big blunt drop.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kvGLd9Ar1Rs/U0tSuFMAlII/AAAAAAAAN_4/fZvam9by_V0/s1600/2013-01-28_16-24-57_127.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kvGLd9Ar1Rs/U0tSuFMAlII/AAAAAAAAN_4/fZvam9by_V0/s1600/2013-01-28_16-24-57_127.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
Loop! Overlap the ends until the circumference is the final desired circumference.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QG3VfgNpNK8/U0tSuAqxogI/AAAAAAAAN_4/vLNju8JROLQ/s1600/2013-01-28_16-25-27_324.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QG3VfgNpNK8/U0tSuAqxogI/AAAAAAAAN_4/vLNju8JROLQ/s1600/2013-01-28_16-25-27_324.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
This is the toughest part. The loop is tiny and the machine foot likes to get in the way. Go. Slowly. I have bent/broken so many needles making these.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MCVTqjnwtOE/U0tSuC9RLdI/AAAAAAAAN_4/Ed4l6yu-8g0/s1600/2013-01-28_16-26-40_597.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MCVTqjnwtOE/U0tSuC9RLdI/AAAAAAAAN_4/Ed4l6yu-8g0/s1600/2013-01-28_16-26-40_597.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
For this bracelet, I used a straight stitch in a slightly longer than normal length and went back and forth a couple times. Go slowly. I often now use a wide zig zag with a longer than normal stitch length to tack this part down because it gives less of a seam valley in the finished product. Either way, as you can see below, one attachment is not enough to keep the ends nice and snug.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qcT-1veVnKM/U0tSuC03FVI/AAAAAAAAN_4/ibj8OXsg8wQ/s1600/2013-01-28_16-28-41_237.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qcT-1veVnKM/U0tSuC03FVI/AAAAAAAAN_4/ibj8OXsg8wQ/s1600/2013-01-28_16-28-41_237.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
I stitch it down about 1/2"-3/4" away, depending on how much excess length I have in the bracelet. Make sure both of these seams are going through both layers of rigilene or the rigilene can eventually start to poke through the lycra.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UG2xFhiMhec/U0tSuLtEYCI/AAAAAAAAN_4/akCvTs-eZGk/s1600/2013-01-28_16-29-20_777.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UG2xFhiMhec/U0tSuLtEYCI/AAAAAAAAN_4/akCvTs-eZGk/s1600/2013-01-28_16-29-20_777.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
You can see in the picture below what I mean about the seam valleys. They'll be completely covered in rhinestones though, so if it doesn't bother you, don't worry about it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-S72UcZXYqMA/U0tSuH-j3oI/AAAAAAAAN_4/XpOG5_cY6aA/s1600/2013-01-28_16-31-03_982.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-S72UcZXYqMA/U0tSuH-j3oI/AAAAAAAAN_4/XpOG5_cY6aA/s1600/2013-01-28_16-31-03_982.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
And now you're ready to stone it!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-S5r49DBxvmo/U0tSuLYAQ2I/AAAAAAAAN_4/iz6lYtzK8YY/s1600/2013-01-28_16-31-20_511.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-S5r49DBxvmo/U0tSuLYAQ2I/AAAAAAAAN_4/iz6lYtzK8YY/s1600/2013-01-28_16-31-20_511.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>

I was good about taking pictures as I went, but have not been as good about posting them. I finished the aqua and lime dress, now affectionately referred to as either "the fish dress" or "the mermaid dress", back in October. It is my favorite to date and I am extremely pleased with the end result. I also recently sold the pink dress (yay!) and am in the process of doing some alterations for the new owner, including adding a bunch of crystal AB to the lace and making a new stoned belt to go with it.<br />
<br />
So the mermaid dress:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Y3fgNs6xjVo/UqDL3GPfDMI/AAAAAAAANm0/RbraRRmHuMU/s1600/2013-08-01_19-20-43_484.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Y3fgNs6xjVo/UqDL3GPfDMI/AAAAAAAANm0/RbraRRmHuMU/s320/2013-08-01_19-20-43_484.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
I played around with some different ideas to embellish the top, rushed net<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KzMKIkj51Xg/UqDL3HhG1bI/AAAAAAAANm0/JIxOTbEtOOA/s1600/2013-08-01_19-20-55_584.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KzMKIkj51Xg/UqDL3HhG1bI/AAAAAAAANm0/JIxOTbEtOOA/s320/2013-08-01_19-20-55_584.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
Ruffles. In retrospect now they look so overpowering and top heavy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hvsdjXkA6M0/UqDL3PZGAnI/AAAAAAAANm0/q_U6Q8evxg4/s1600/2013-08-04_01-10-49_760.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hvsdjXkA6M0/UqDL3PZGAnI/AAAAAAAANm0/q_U6Q8evxg4/s320/2013-08-04_01-10-49_760.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I then found an amazing embroidery tutorial from the woman who makes the Game of Thrones costumes. If you'd like to check it out, go to her website: http://www.michelecarragherembroidery.com/How-I-Create-an-Embroidery%282880144%29.htm<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1xWfByIMm8s/UqDL3CdbO0I/AAAAAAAANm0/0Rwb5_YrVdw/s1600/2013-08-04_19-51-00_926.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1xWfByIMm8s/UqDL3CdbO0I/AAAAAAAANm0/0Rwb5_YrVdw/s320/2013-08-04_19-51-00_926.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
My designs don't even come close to hers in complexity and richness, but I was inspired to try out some new things, so I decided to make some fish to go on my dress, and hence, the mermaid/fish dress came to be.<br />

I loved the way the fish turned out, and wanted to make more of them to put all over the dress, but they took about 4 hours each to make and therefore were not feasible.<br />

The final step for them is coating the back in glue to keep the threads from pulling loose, and then gluing/stitching them on.<br />

I played around with some more designs for the bodice, but ultimately decided on a striped, ruched net top and leaving the net sides bare.</div>

I played around with some places to put the fish too, but with only two of them, I had a hard time deciding where to put them so that they wouldn't look out of place or too small.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qyP_x4ViVuA/UqDL3BYS0YI/AAAAAAAANm0/dWZSu_w4-4c/s1600/2013-09-17_02-25-45_902.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qyP_x4ViVuA/UqDL3BYS0YI/AAAAAAAANm0/dWZSu_w4-4c/s320/2013-09-17_02-25-45_902.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Bodice stoning. I added a little bit of fringe to the front just to give it a little more something to draw the eye.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_H3eWvP9xjs/UqDL3N49xZI/AAAAAAAANm0/bOuFLoYzW4g/s1600/2013-09-17_01-28-59_91.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_H3eWvP9xjs/UqDL3N49xZI/AAAAAAAANm0/bOuFLoYzW4g/s320/2013-09-17_01-28-59_91.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Experimenting with more stoning ideas, ultimately decided to leave the light blue stripes plain so that the green ones were more accented.<br />

Here you can see what I ultimately did with the fish a little better. I decided to run with the fish motif and stone the bodice like it was scales.<br />

One of my favorite books as a child was the rainbow fish. I drew inspiration from that and decided to fill in some of the scales with different colored rhinestones.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xGTq__tw3wg/UqDL3HQ5gvI/AAAAAAAANm0/QYNy2WkCbnA/s1600/IMG_20131015_190514_431-MOTION.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xGTq__tw3wg/UqDL3HQ5gvI/AAAAAAAANm0/QYNy2WkCbnA/s320/IMG_20131015_190514_431-MOTION.gif" width="180" /></a></div>
Pre float stoning, including the FOUR circle organza underskirt. I like the way the gif makes the sparkles more evident.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NmMmgEY5vno/UqDL3Krh2fI/AAAAAAAANm0/CF2mPeGNDWM/s1600/IMG_20131015_190558_062.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NmMmgEY5vno/UqDL3Krh2fI/AAAAAAAANm0/CF2mPeGNDWM/s320/IMG_20131015_190558_062.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
I am going to continue to fill in more of the scales as time permits, but I decided it was wearable at that point. I also stoned the float arm bands.<br />

I was using an online stopwatch and the tab closed, resetting it. It was around 16 hours at that point and that was when I had just started sewing godets into the top skirt. I estimate that since then I've spent about 6 more hours putting the remainder of the godets in, making a pistachio chiffon underskirt with a fishing line hem, and now I am working on a turquoise organza underskirt. This one is going to be detachable so I can use it for another dress I've got in the planning stages. It will be crinoline trimmed and as of now, is at 4 full circles (though it starts low, around the knees. I'm trying to get that big fluff out at the bottom going).<br />
<br />
When I last left you guys I was just finishing pattern drafting. I have since made the bodice, bodysuit, and inserted the mesh side panels. I'm afraid I didn't get any pictures of that before I started inserting the skirt panels. The top skirt is made of 6 quarter circles with circular ruffles on the edges and a gathered ruffle at the bottom. There are a lot of ruffles, and for a while my sewing area looked like a green dress had just exploded everywhere:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Q3X6t2juS-0/Ue2U5DU-gTI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/Ctk8tQ7TJFE/s1600/IMG_20130619_133010_521.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Q3X6t2juS-0/Ue2U5DU-gTI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/Ctk8tQ7TJFE/s320/IMG_20130619_133010_521.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is all of the ruffles organized by type, there are 5 different kinds, small, medium, large, double length small, and giant gathered ruffle for the hem (see pile on floor).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_c4Wi2fdXEA/Ue2U5HluSjI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/Rd3na8SGBfc/s1600/IMG_20130620_172138_270.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_c4Wi2fdXEA/Ue2U5HluSjI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/Rd3na8SGBfc/s320/IMG_20130620_172138_270.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
The best way to make a super long (500 inches!) ruffle is to zigzag stitch over a heavier thread. Due to the length, I cut my heavy thread at a couple places so I could adjust individual sections more easily as I attach it to the rest of the skirt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2O1q3o425RA/Ue2U5FbfEPI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/OuRxxkuEJu4/s1600/IMG_20130619_163359_513.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2O1q3o425RA/Ue2U5FbfEPI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/OuRxxkuEJu4/s320/IMG_20130619_163359_513.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
This is a single skirt panel with the 3 ruffles (small, medium, and large) basted to it. I was going to pleat the double length small ruffles and top stitch them to the one side of the panel, but I think that might be too much ruffle now that it's coming together.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<br />
<br />
The first underskirt, chiffon with fishing line trim. 12 quarter circle panels<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-trGOTUWpQMI/Ue2U5PTH2MI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/rJj-Smz5efc/s1600/IMG_20130619_140930_483.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-trGOTUWpQMI/Ue2U5PTH2MI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/rJj-Smz5efc/s320/IMG_20130619_140930_483.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
After stitching them together, I staystitched the top and pinned it to the back of a chair to let the bias settle out. Trimming these bits is much like giving a haircut, trim to the shortest bit and make it all even.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dIOaqfKdrGQ/Ue2U5LKSGtI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/T64RosDh8VY/s1600/IMG_20130721_162350_611.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dIOaqfKdrGQ/Ue2U5LKSGtI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/T64RosDh8VY/s320/IMG_20130721_162350_611.jpg" width="179" /></a></div>
<br />
This was my first time doing a fishing line hem, not as hard as it might seem, but more difficult than crinoline. I used my serger with these tension settings:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-X7qF7nDTG-o/Ue2U5KLNmRI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/O7gCVf7yhJc/s1600/IMG_20130722_121242_523.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-X7qF7nDTG-o/Ue2U5KLNmRI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/O7gCVf7yhJc/s320/IMG_20130722_121242_523.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Every once in a while the fabric will start to bunch, usually if I'm going too fast or holding the line too tightly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Hj7L-exT9T4/Ue2U5C1yUfI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/nwJQ18uoglA/s1600/IMG_20130722_121739_093.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Hj7L-exT9T4/Ue2U5C1yUfI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/nwJQ18uoglA/s320/IMG_20130722_121739_093.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
Pushing the line through though will "inflate" these curls and get rid of the bunching. This is easier if you catch it sooner or you'll have a lot of fabric to try to move the line through.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nnvLX9lSqU4/Ue2U5PQS2RI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/57l4ppYtDSo/s1600/IMG_20130722_121235_930.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nnvLX9lSqU4/Ue2U5PQS2RI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/57l4ppYtDSo/s320/IMG_20130722_121235_930.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I inserted the line between the needle and the blade. After it gets started, it pretty much takes care of itself, as long as it isn't getting too tangled. This is a case where a light touch makes it go so much better. Gently guiding the line rather than trying to push or pull it worked best. Moderate speed also gave the line enough time to get moved by the feed dogs at the same pace as the fabric.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-U7bqGirAqUk/Ue2U5CQdt0I/AAAAAAAAMXQ/YZvFe6URdp4/s1600/IMG_20130722_121221_887.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-U7bqGirAqUk/Ue2U5CQdt0I/AAAAAAAAMXQ/YZvFe6URdp4/s320/IMG_20130722_121221_887.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
When I had only 10 inches to go, I sliced through the line for the first time. Sad face.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--jrbUUD1yHo/Ue2U5P6TmyI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/woMfwAR2qss/s1600/IMG_20130722_124218_753.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--jrbUUD1yHo/Ue2U5P6TmyI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/woMfwAR2qss/s320/IMG_20130722_124218_753.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
Fixing it is no big deal though, I overlapped the new line with the old by a couple inches and just serged over it.<br />

And here's the underskirt complete with fishing line! I like the curl the 40 lb line is giving to the chiffon.<br />

For fun that is. I've been doing lots of sewing in my advanced costume construction class, and have learned so many new things which I hope to apply to my dresses in the future. One of the biggest being: understitching. This is a magic process in which you stitch layers of seam allowance to a facing or lining, thereby keeping them neat and tidy tucked away without stitches showing on top. Works like magic, makes a garment look very professional.<br />
<br />
The title of this post was inspired by the fact that I never seem to know how much time it takes me to make things. I've always been terrible at estimating times, which often results in late nights frantically finishing homework, projects, commissions, etc. So I have decided that as I make this ballgown, I will be starting and stopping a stopwatch with each time I start or stop progress. This should also make me blog more regularly, since I can record the times in here in case the stopwatch website decides to eat them for some unknown reason (mainly, computers are evil). I can't include time thinking about the project, since I'd be starting and stopping the stopwatch all the time, but I will include the time spent patterning, drafting, tracing, cutting, sewing, embellishing, fitting, stoning, etc etc etc (blogging not included). I will preface each post/segment with the times spent and then underneath say what I did in that time. For some of you, this may show you just how much time I waste tearing things out, but the other seamstresses out there will understand.<br />
<br />
So, ready, set, SEW!<br />
<br />
(00:00:00-00:29:03)<br />
Pattern drafting! This design is going to have some slight modifications to my basic pattern I used in my previous two dresses (<a href="http://stitchesandsparkles.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-saga-continues-green-dress-version.html">Ariel</a> and <a href="http://stitchesandsparkles.blogspot.com/2013/03/sugar-pink-and-spearmint-completed.html">Aurora</a>) most importantly, a mesh panel cut out of the side, similar to this dress:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://media-cache-ak1.pinimg.com/736x/15/0e/dd/150eddb2f2f430520b1724e02bddacfd.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://media-cache-ak1.pinimg.com/736x/15/0e/dd/150eddb2f2f430520b1724e02bddacfd.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This means redrafting the pattern to accomodate this slicing and drafting a new piece for the mesh insert. Enough talking about the design though, here's the sketch of the idea:</div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZygyJH5iY-k/UZ2Tb4ShQqI/AAAAAAAAMDM/UwWT-_Cn_EY/s1600/IMG_20130521_232501_577.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZygyJH5iY-k/UZ2Tb4ShQqI/AAAAAAAAMDM/UwWT-_Cn_EY/s320/IMG_20130521_232501_577.jpg" width="180" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Front</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SqK6w20TPgk/UZ2Tb_DYaZI/AAAAAAAAMDM/UrPWT0BjATU/s1600/IMG_20130521_232516_417.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SqK6w20TPgk/UZ2Tb_DYaZI/AAAAAAAAMDM/UrPWT0BjATU/s320/IMG_20130521_232516_417.jpg" width="180" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Back, showing floats</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The skirt is highly textured, featuring ruffles, pleated ruffles, and gathers at the bottom. It should be a lot of fun, both to make and to wear. And here's the bodysuit pattern showing big gaping hole where mesh goes! The actual mesh piece won't be that big since that also accounts for body curvature, but it also shows how I've arranged some appliques that I may use around those areas, they will have to be dyed to match first though.<br />

I debuted my new pink and spearmint dress at BAMJam this past weekend. (Photo credit to Ankith Gunapal) One of my friends said the green dress is like "Ariel" from The Little Mermaid and this one is "Aurora" from Sleeping Beauty. I'll take it.</div>

I also did not tan for this competition, and I think with the colors of the dress, it might work. It's a much more "classic princess" pale look.</div>

<br />
This dress went through a process before I finally decided it was done, there seemed to be something missing though. It lacked that focus and that little oomph to make it seem complete.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I tried adding a little stoned design on a piece of lycra to the front, but even before it was done I could tell that wasn't it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-il333AL-PwI/UTbSETOxeNI/AAAAAAAAKeQ/u-JzWzXWatQ/s1600/2013-02-20_00-48-35_83.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-il333AL-PwI/UTbSETOxeNI/AAAAAAAAKeQ/u-JzWzXWatQ/s320/2013-02-20_00-48-35_83.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I toyed with a wide, underbust corset/wide belt kind of thing with beading. using that same stoned piece as the center<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NzGTlHTrfg4/UTbSEbO5s3I/AAAAAAAAKeQ/5-Nq3tCTv3g/s1600/2013-02-25_00-20-47_762.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NzGTlHTrfg4/UTbSEbO5s3I/AAAAAAAAKeQ/5-Nq3tCTv3g/s320/2013-02-25_00-20-47_762.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I ended up ripping out the beading, but still wasn't happy with any of the ideas I came up with for designs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PdKQbYHmG3Q/UTbSEarUuUI/AAAAAAAAKeQ/T5ZV7T8UZog/s1600/2013-02-25_01-40-01_737.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PdKQbYHmG3Q/UTbSEarUuUI/AAAAAAAAKeQ/T5ZV7T8UZog/s320/2013-02-25_01-40-01_737.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I tried some little leaf motifs to keep with the rose lace theme, but even that was meh.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-A4fmwFznzlk/UTbS781_4XI/AAAAAAAAKes/-Al45D_zwlI/s1600/2013-02-26_00-17-42_353.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-A4fmwFznzlk/UTbS781_4XI/AAAAAAAAKes/-Al45D_zwlI/s320/2013-02-26_00-17-42_353.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
So it was the day before the competition and I still wasn't happy with what I had and I had already promised to rent out my other dress to a friend, so I had to wear this one. In the afternoon I decided that maybe it didn't need something huge and ostentatious, maybe a simple thin sparkly belt in the chrysolite (mint green) would do the trick. And the more I thought about it, the more I liked it. I decided to make a 1" fully stoned belt in the chrysolite (spearmint).</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-763aVhambQI/UTbTpEsM2bI/AAAAAAAAKe0/Ck0Gz2AckIA/s1600/2013-03-02_15-11-04_956.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-763aVhambQI/UTbTpEsM2bI/AAAAAAAAKe0/Ck0Gz2AckIA/s320/2013-03-02_15-11-04_956.jpg" width="180" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Belt making!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I learned something very useful in my costume construction class lately that relates to covering elastic in fabric, particularly a kind of slippery, thin fabric like this dance crepe. If you place the side that wants to slip around more against the feed dogs, they will manage the fabric better and evenly send it through the machine. The result:<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5Hinej9XjPI/UTbUIdXkO1I/AAAAAAAAKe8/lG-AB3HFjjM/s1600/2013-03-02_15-11-48_739.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5Hinej9XjPI/UTbUIdXkO1I/AAAAAAAAKe8/lG-AB3HFjjM/s320/2013-03-02_15-11-48_739.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A beautiful flat seam, just ready to by trimmed back and stoned. I added a couple snaps, sewed on some big stones, and then set off stoning. I made a little motif for the center front and then started filling in with the 16 ss chrysolites. At some point, I realized I wasn't going to be able to sleep and finish completely stoning the belt. I decided to just do a bit in the front and in the back and taper to points on the sides. I added some sew on stones to the back and then the chrysolites.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jyd9tC9kbNY/UTdvymeQGDI/AAAAAAAAKg8/u9JnveOp4oI/s1600/2013-03-06_10-49-19_321.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jyd9tC9kbNY/UTdvymeQGDI/AAAAAAAAKg8/u9JnveOp4oI/s320/2013-03-06_10-49-19_321.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When all was said and done, it was a little too loose and didn't sit right at my waist, but a little on my hips. Before my next competition I'll be making it smaller and finish filling in the rest so it's completely stoned.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-U7PLEcxoOsg/UTdmOSXFKTI/AAAAAAAAKfM/x86vVmLk60k/s1600/2013-02-28_22-10-29_100.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-U7PLEcxoOsg/UTdmOSXFKTI/AAAAAAAAKfM/x86vVmLk60k/s320/2013-02-28_22-10-29_100.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also started making a necklace to go along with the dress, but it also wasn't finished by BAMJam. This is a piece of baby pink stretch net attached to some cappuccino dance crepe with some clear fusible web I found at Joann's. I cut a little piece out of an index card to use as a stencil so I could make the sew on stones evenly spaced and symmetrical, but I managed to make it lopsided anyway. Oh well, can't tell unless you're looking for it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9sd39Ogqwl0/UTdmOVPnTFI/AAAAAAAAKfM/598kFeAtVz0/s1600/2013-03-01_01-08-32_464.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9sd39Ogqwl0/UTdmOVPnTFI/AAAAAAAAKfM/598kFeAtVz0/s320/2013-03-01_01-08-32_464.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
More stones to be added, including some pendants and maybe some pearls!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
ETA: Snow day means finished the belt today!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sA1kjX7Wd_o/UTgjEV0QK7I/AAAAAAAAKi4/eNa3hhu-OQs/s1600/2013-03-07_00-13-39_665.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sA1kjX7Wd_o/UTgjEV0QK7I/AAAAAAAAKi4/eNa3hhu-OQs/s320/2013-03-07_00-13-39_665.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Also reworked the necklace to make it on the straight edge (more choker like) hopefully it'll sit nicely on my neck once it's all cut out. More to come on that still.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Something I didn't know when I made my first couple dresses was that you need to let skirts that are cut on the bias hang and stretch before you hem them. Parts cut on the bias will stretch out a lot more than portions cut on the straight of grain or cross grain, so to make sure your skirt stays even for years to come, let it hang to let those parts stretch out first. I've heard a week is recommended to hang, but you can speed up the process by adding clothespins along the bottom edge.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7_nZHQXcQ-I/UPD5Ehg-QTI/AAAAAAAAJYU/KBMUz2fPLaQ/s1600/2013-01-03_02-32-52_267.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7_nZHQXcQ-I/UPD5Ehg-QTI/AAAAAAAAJYU/KBMUz2fPLaQ/s640/2013-01-03_02-32-52_267.jpg" width="360" /></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's the dress after I hemmed the topskirts, attached the crinoline to the underskirts, and sewed them in. I made a couple ruffles which are attached to the neckline and form the sleeves. I didn't get any pictures while I was making them, but they're easy to make using a donut shaped stencil. I'll have to make a post about that later since it's much easier to explain with pictures. I made some more ruffles to put on the skirt then, alternating green and pink on each godet.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Mp72sMyf7tk/UPD5Eqz6PVI/AAAAAAAAJYU/cEooVYB0SoY/s1600/2013-01-03_02-43-34_409.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Mp72sMyf7tk/UPD5Eqz6PVI/AAAAAAAAJYU/cEooVYB0SoY/s640/2013-01-03_02-43-34_409.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I ended up bringing the underskirts up a little bit, shortening them and evening them out a little bit so the green doesn't shown under the pink when standing still. Next stage is making the floats and stoning. The plan is to stone the lace like so:</div>

Hello all! Been busy working on my pink and spearmint dress (which I affectionately refer to as my "ice cream" dress, since the pink looks like strawberry ice cream, the spearmint looks like mint ice cream, and the tan looks like coffee ice cream, and maybe I'm just a little too hungry when I sew...) and I've gotten a lot done in the last few days. I've sewn the top layer of skirts to the bodice, and I'm quite proud of how it turned out. I used my serger to properly finish the seams, and they look very nice and professional. Sewing points into a cavity is infinitely trickier than it sounds like it should be, and I had a lot of trouble with it until a) I looked at a friend's dress to see how it was done, and b) I took the time to actually hand baste it in place. The trick is to get very close to the edge of the stretchy top fabric that's the concave part you are sewing the point into. This is much easier when you're not dealing with pins and it's hand basted.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-STkGMFWoXI8/UN0z9wPLwPI/AAAAAAAAJFE/iEEWSNbtnG4/s1600/2012-12-26_22-55-26_333.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-STkGMFWoXI8/UN0z9wPLwPI/AAAAAAAAJFE/iEEWSNbtnG4/s320/2012-12-26_22-55-26_333.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NreRx_DbPak/UN0z95VO45I/AAAAAAAAJFE/u-eQw_1jc2U/s1600/2012-12-26_22-55-10_159.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NreRx_DbPak/UN0z95VO45I/AAAAAAAAJFE/u-eQw_1jc2U/s320/2012-12-26_22-55-10_159.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Yay for sergers and nicely finished seams so they will stop unraveling!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After finishing the godets, I made the bodysuit and basted it to the bodice. In a super blonde moment, I made the bodysuit tan, instead of the pink I had intended, so I'm going to have to change my plan a little bit. In the end, I think my subconscious knew what it was doing though, cause I think this will turn out better in the end. I also made some elastic straps, which are covered in the cappuccino dance crepe, and are now wonderfully soft and will be the right color for when I'm in comp tan. These are really easy to make, some day I'll make a tutorial for it, since the technique could be expanded for making those arm bands that floats are often connected to (which is probably what I'm going to do for the floats on this dress).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CMrt45sBhJo/UN0z97s9AcI/AAAAAAAAJFE/YfnaCiDRNA0/s1600/2012-12-27_11-58-22_297.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CMrt45sBhJo/UN0z97s9AcI/AAAAAAAAJFE/YfnaCiDRNA0/s320/2012-12-27_11-58-22_297.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
And now I'm working on putting the zipper in. More pics to come once I can actually wear it!<br />
<br />
Edited to add: Zipper is in, and thank God, it fits! It's tight, but nice and snug. Phew. Was worried there, this lace doesn't stretch as much as the lycra does.</div>

I made these for a silent auction, but if you know anyone interested in some, let me know: $25 for one, or $40 for a pair, many colors.<br />

And in motion! I actually remembered to sew in the bra cups so the pins weren't stabbing me the whole time.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09362242287228936851noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2220376660446558282.post-62037022885303743762012-10-15T21:11:00.000-07:002012-10-15T21:12:38.173-07:00Green Standard Dress Version 2.0<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made the mistake of hanging my <a href="http://stitchesandsparkles.blogspot.com/2012/01/pictures-and-video-of-final-product.html">green standard dress </a>on my closet door not in a garment bag for a while. After seeing it every night when I went to sleep and every morning when I woke up, I began to notice more and more mistakes and imperfections. Like Frankenstein, my creation stared at me and reminded me of everything I had done wrong again and again.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So it came to the point where I decided I needed to fix it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My initial plan was to just restone it and hope that would solve a lot of the more glaring mistakes. I attempted to soak the dress in warm water, then tried washing it in the washing machine on warm (in a sewn shut pillow case) and still had not lost a single stone. Apparently I did a really good job with the gluing first time around. I know that acetone will remove the stones, but that means ruining the lycra underneath. As I was ordering fabric for the new pink standard dress, I decided to order a yard of lycra and some extra chiffon in the apple green, since it it now all on clearance. In the meantime as I started working on the pink dress, I realized I did not have enough organza and crinoline trim to do what I wanted with the underskirts. Since my parents will be in London in the next month, I am going to have them bring me more fabric to save the cost of shipping.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This meant that I still needed a dress for DCDI though, and I was not happy enough with the state of the green one to wear it. So I began working on the remakes, version 2.0, of the apple green standard dress. After only two days of work, here is the state:</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-psEw7j7T_Y0/UHzbv3N-BsI/AAAAAAAAIMs/63t2_mzHkHw/s1600/2012-10-12_01-36-12_836.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-psEw7j7T_Y0/UHzbv3N-BsI/AAAAAAAAIMs/63t2_mzHkHw/s320/2012-10-12_01-36-12_836.jpg" width="180" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The pink is just the other dress underneath, I was too lazy to take it off.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I am going to be taking the organza skirts from the old version and adding them as the bottommost layer of skirts in addition to this layer here. I haven't worked up the courage to actually cut them off the other dress yet though. There's no going back then.<br />
<br />
After a third day, the back seam is now sewn, the bodice has the elastic sewn in, and it has tan straps. I have decided to do high mesh gauntlets instead of sleeves with a lycra top, and hang my floats from them. More to come later, but there will be feathers!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09362242287228936851noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2220376660446558282.post-64531956303129775512012-10-09T08:47:00.002-07:002012-10-09T08:47:34.586-07:00Pink Standard Dress in ProgressI've been terrible about taking pictures of this as it goes, but here are a few in progress.<br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

If I weren't so dead tired already (it is almost 2 am now) I would be diving on in, but the effort to move is greater than my desire to sew. But here are some pretty pictures to give you an idea of the things to come!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eqJsphI23lA/UErcynV2lWI/AAAAAAAAH54/TKEPhEcJ-2I/s1600/210448_3764137021690_1236136579_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eqJsphI23lA/UErcynV2lWI/AAAAAAAAH54/TKEPhEcJ-2I/s320/210448_3764137021690_1236136579_o.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aRyWfixPeyo/UBcFfFwK-jI/AAAAAAAAHqo/XySnTYJGDps/s1600/2012-07-18_15-07-48_484.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aRyWfixPeyo/UBcFfFwK-jI/AAAAAAAAHqo/XySnTYJGDps/s320/2012-07-18_15-07-48_484.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Materials:<br />
Clear silicon sealant (I believe this was purchased at home depot or the like, it was just sitting in our garage so I'm not 100% certain)<br />
Stretch net/powermesh in the color you want, about 5 pieces big enough to contain your design<br />
Popsicle stick<br />
Mat/board to work on, don't get silicon sealant on anything<br />
Rhinestones<br />
Rhinestone glue<br />
Scissors<br />
Optional: I'm told silicon mold release will protect your work surface, I just used an old cutting board and didn't let it sit long enough to bond to it<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qQWAe-9aX00/UBcGNtjI5fI/AAAAAAAAHrM/KhoaePdqVeA/s1600/2012-07-18_15-20-02_312.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qQWAe-9aX00/UBcGNtjI5fI/AAAAAAAAHrM/KhoaePdqVeA/s320/2012-07-18_15-20-02_312.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I began with two layers of net and used the silicon sealant to begin to trace out the pattern I wanted the fabric part to take.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zi-_uHcJF0A/UBcGZ4jcynI/AAAAAAAAHrU/aOIDs8B7jdM/s1600/2012-07-18_15-28-05_337.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zi-_uHcJF0A/UBcGZ4jcynI/AAAAAAAAHrU/aOIDs8B7jdM/s320/2012-07-18_15-28-05_337.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I added another layer of mesh on top and using a popsicle stick, smoothed the silicon into the fabric. This will be sticky, it will be messy, and it will smell like vinegar. The silicon releases acetic acid as it cures so don't leave it on your skin. Starting with two layers on the underside kept it from sticking to the mat. Repeat this step, adding a layer of silicon then a layer of net, until your piece is about 5 layers thick. By this point, mine had some good body to it and seemed to be able to hold up well. I believe I left this overnight to cure, though not because it necessarily needed it. If it's still sticky, let it be, if you feel like you can handle it, continue to the next step, which is:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fw9DFK44keA/UBcHKbuwXuI/AAAAAAAAHro/q-4tKtfbC_A/s1600/2012-07-19_00-42-29_435.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fw9DFK44keA/UBcHKbuwXuI/AAAAAAAAHro/q-4tKtfbC_A/s320/2012-07-19_00-42-29_435.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Cut out your shape. I decided to go with a pretty basic shape for my first one and made a scalloped kind of shape. Sharp scissors and slow going are indispensable at this point. Take your time, you'll be glad. After that I used the silicon sealant one last time on the back to give it that kind of rubbery backing that I remember a lot of ballroom jewelry having. Let dry.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2YAbNFTfRTU/UBcI-1-EE_I/AAAAAAAAHr0/7_SP8idT9k0/s1600/2012-07-20_03-03-19_91.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2YAbNFTfRTU/UBcI-1-EE_I/AAAAAAAAHr0/7_SP8idT9k0/s320/2012-07-20_03-03-19_91.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The fun part: stone that sucker.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Jjvd6yBjhXs/UBcJDwNMoAI/AAAAAAAAHr8/wlM7uiAcoOI/s1600/2012-07-20_03-17-20_559.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Jjvd6yBjhXs/UBcJDwNMoAI/AAAAAAAAHr8/wlM7uiAcoOI/s320/2012-07-20_03-17-20_559.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
After it the glue is totally dry, trim the excess fabric.<br />
<br />
I haven't actually gotten to this step yet, but then I'm going to attach a hook and eye closure to the ends to keep it together.<br />
<br />

I had a friend take a few at practice a week ago, so as soon as I get them from him I'll post them, but here's some in progress stoning shots I took with my cell.<br />

I decided that the cap sleeves I was going for were just going to look silly in practice so I nixed them and decided to make both gauntlets and bracelets (though I have made neither yet) so that I have options depending on whether it is very warm or not. So here are some pictures of the steps.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Cwm39x5Y-G8/T9pSyB4tRVI/AAAAAAAAHFM/1qG9LZbDg8o/s1600/smooth+dress.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Cwm39x5Y-G8/T9pSyB4tRVI/AAAAAAAAHFM/1qG9LZbDg8o/s640/smooth+dress.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09362242287228936851noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2220376660446558282.post-23444318610077700872012-05-21T22:29:00.003-07:002012-05-21T22:29:40.098-07:00What dreams are made of.Some more concept drawings. I had posted a preliminary concept for the pink standard dress a while ago, but have since fleshed it out a little more. I'm utterly in love with this dress and can't wait to be able to attempt to make it:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xoNMg1G3U78/T7sjc7394KI/AAAAAAAAHEs/OSMY0x62GQw/s1600/Sketch+2012-04-25+02_23_29+(1).png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="295" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xoNMg1G3U78/T7sjc7394KI/AAAAAAAAHEs/OSMY0x62GQw/s320/Sketch+2012-04-25+02_23_29+(1).png" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pink standard</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
And this one is an idea I had for a smooth costume. That's supposed to be leopard print in case you couldn't tell.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-56RWMCOx4CE/T7skBazANZI/AAAAAAAAHE0/l7Sl3rCu9RE/s1600/2012-05-11_00-53-34_355.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-56RWMCOx4CE/T7skBazANZI/AAAAAAAAHE0/l7Sl3rCu9RE/s320/2012-05-11_00-53-34_355.jpg" width="267" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Leopard smooth</td></tr>

I'm working off of the sketch of the orange dress from the previous post. This is the basic body of the dress, it's going to have a belt in addition and chiffon feather like fringe (I don't know if there is a real term for it, but it looks like feathers from a distance yet it isn't so it's syllabus legal and way less expensive) in the flame pattern. So yes, I will be on fire.<br />
